Concussion Management

This comprehensive concussion management program provides both baseline assessments as well as post-concussion screenings to local student athletes participating in contact sports.  As new studies overwhelmingly show that the damage caused by concussions is cumulative, dedicated monitoring and follow-up is an absolute must.

The MK Plus Concussion team utilizes a comprehensive battery of neurological tests to assess children both before any injury, as a preventive measure, as well as after they have suffered a concussion. The tests utilized by MK Plus are designed to reduce the possibility of inaccuracy by employing a four-part assessment:
  • Self-assessment of symptoms by the patient
  • The Standardized Assessment for Concussion (SAC)
  • The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS)
  • ImPACT computerized test
Concussion Screening

ImPACT is a computerized screening tool currently being used by many major league, college and high school sports organizations in the management of concussion injuries.  Testing done prior to a concussion provides a baseline for comparison should a head injury occur and can assist physicians, parents and coaches in developing treatment plans and making decisions for return to sports or activity.

MK Plus is now offering TEAM ImPACT screenings —just in time for the upcoming fall sports season.  The fee for the 30 minute test, administered and supervised by a member of our clinical staff, is $30 per player but team discounts are also available.

We are now offering dicounted team clinics.  Your team will be scheduled for a particular evening or Saturday morning where all interested players can get the ImPACT test performed.

A copy of the child’s baseline test will then be forwarded to the child’s primary care physician.

Please call our team Concussion Screening Coordinator Laura Riley for further information and details.  Laura can be reached during the week at 215-968-5151.

Post Concussion Management

Should your child sustain a head injury, they will be offered the opportunity, even if they have not had a baseline screening done, to take the ImPACT as part of their visit to the physician office.  This ImPACT test can assess the child at that time and while it can’t be compared to a ‘baseline’ if one was not done.  These findings may help to assess the healing process.

Our in-house neuropsychologist may be consulted at that time to assist in the post-injury recovery process.  He may choose to select different testing tools that can be used to assess the area of the child’s brain that might be showing evidence of slower healing.  For example, balance testing and more in-depth memory testing tools may be used to hone in on specific cognitive areas that may have been affected by the injury.

Currently any consultations with our experienced in-house neuropsychologist is done on a fee-for-service basis but we are working with the insurance companies to determine whether the post-concussion management services will be considered a ‘covered’ service.
